Gracefully Teaching the Doctrines of Grace

One of the staples of reformed theology is something knows as “The Doctrines of Grace”.  The title describes the soteriological (the study of the doctrine of salvation) doctrines that are unique to Reformed theology.  Most often you may hear them associated with the acrostic TULIP.  The acronym stands for:

  • Total Depravity – as a result of Adam’s fall, the entire human race is affected and we are spiritually dead in our trespasses
  • Unconditional Election – being spiritually dead, we are unable to initiate a saving response to God
  • Limited Atonement – that Christ’s death atoned for those whom He would save
  • Irresistible Grace – those whom God has elected are drawn to Christ by grace that is irresistible
  • Perseverance of the Saints – those whom God has elected and drawn unto Himself through the Holy Spirit will persevere in faith

At first glance, some may balk at some or all of these doctrines.  However, with careful study and mediation of Scripture, each one may be backed by Scripture.  There is no doubt, over the years many believers have been put off by such theology due in large part to poor or heartless preaching.

The following is a collection of teachings on the Doctrines of Grace from Arturo “Art” Azurdia, D. Min.  He a pastor at Trinity Church of Portland and Associate Professor of Pastoral and Church Ministry at Western Seminary.  It is perhaps the best teaching on the subjects that address them with kindness, accuracy, Biblical integrity, and of course grace.
