5 Sermons Every Christian Should Hear

I’m always vexed when someone asks me “What preachers should I listen to?” How could I possibly narrow that list down to anything manageable?

Of course, narrowing sermons down is hardly any easier, but at least with sermons I only have to consider the ones I have listened to up to this point. Instead of recommending “John Piper” I can be more specific and say “Don’t Waste Your Life by John Piper.” This is much less overwhelming to the person who asked, and it guides them toward a specific area.

With that said, I have arbitrarily and subjectively limited this post to five sermon recommendations. This is not meant to exclude other possibilities, it’s just meant to be practical. These are sermons that have been very influential on me and my thinking, and I think they will substantially help anyone who takes the time to absorb their principles. So here goes (in no particular order):

1. And They Crucified Him by Art Katz

This is a great sermon on the cross and its significance in the Christian life.

2. Ten Indictments Against the Modern Church by Paul Washer

This sermon explains principles for biblical reformation in the American church.

3. A Call to Anguish by David Wilkerson

The title is pretty self explanatory, we need anguish over sin.

4. Ten Shekels and a Shirt by Paris Reidhead

Reidhead delivers a powerful rebuke to self-centered humanistic thinking making inroads in the church.

5. Surrender by Dick Brogden

Brogden is a missionary to Egypt and delivered this sermon at a missions conference for college students in Forth Worth, Texas. At one point in the sermon, at a conference meant to recruit students to missions, Brogden frankly told the audience to surrender the idea that God needs them.
